Ways to reduce sound system noise to other tenants in a shared commercial space

Question:

We are an exercise studio in a commercial space with another tenant right next door to us. The tenant next door is complaining our music is too loud and they can hear the "thump thump" of the bass through our shared wall. Is this an issue your company may be able to help with? Thanks for the consideration. Any guidance you can offer would be helpful.

Response:

Yes, the pounding "Bass" can certainly go through walls because of its long wave forms.

Are you aware of whether the walls are insulated between the two spaces?  A lot of the time in commercial buildings, the builder will not insulate the walls. If not, then insulating the walls between the two spaces would be the first step.

Second, typically in commercial buildings the space above the drop ceiling is not divided between the two spaces. The builder will often not install a complete wall from the floor to the roof line.  If there is no wall between the two spaces above the drop ceiling, then one should be added and it should be insulated.

No, we do not handle the insulating of the walls and/or the adding of the wall above the drop ceiling.  I would recommend having your maintenance person check on these two items and see if they are or are not completed. If not, then you should start there.

If these items are already finished within your space, then the next solution is to add acoustical insulation between the two spaces, which means increasing the thickness of the wall. You would lose some space on your side of the wall to achieve this action.

Hopefully, all of this makes sense, but if you have questions please feel free to call and/or e-mail us.
